Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and criss-crossed by the Oreto River, Palermo is Sicily's largest city. A key stopover for many sea cruises, its port can accommodate liners of over 100,000 tons. Palermo's must-see buildings include the Palazzo dei Normanni. Founded in the 9th century, this palace once housed emperors and kings. Restored in the 16th century, it houses a Byzantine chapel built during the reign of King Roger II.
