Before you embark on your cruise to contemplate the riches of New Orleans, take a stroll through the historic Vieux Carré or "French Quarter". Louisiana's most visited district, it's brimming with beautiful colonial-style homes and iconic monuments, including the Maison Napoléon or Maison Girod, built in 1797, and the famous home of Spanish-born Delphine Lalaurie, known as an inveterate serial killer. The district is also renowned for its high concentration of markets, notably along Royal Street. Here you'll find sculptures, paintings and other objets d'art dating back to antiquity. Continue your visit in the trendy Art District. Completely renovated in 1976 from a former warehouse district, it is now home to some 25 art galleries, museums and artists' studios open to the public. A stroll along Garden District Avenue under the shady lanes, set against a backdrop of attractive mansions in distinct architectural styles, is also a must. Visit the Mardi Gras Museum to learn more about the origins and history of Carnival. A nice piece of King Cake will round off your visit to the museum.
