France, a country with many faces

France enjoys a privileged position at the heart of Western Europe, sharing land borders with countries such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg. This proximity has shaped the contrasting landscape of the 672,369 km² country and influenced the culture of its regions. Bordered on one side by the North Sea and on the other by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, France also boasts a vast coastline, much to the delight of bathing and lounging enthusiasts. For many, France is the capital of gastronomy, and they're right. In France, the culinary arts play an important role. Every region has its own specialty, from quiche lorraine to gratin dauphinois, and every stage of your trip is a gourmet pause. But France is much more than a destination for gourmets, it's also a vast playground for nature lovers. Between strolling along the pine-fringed beaches of the Landes or the rocky cliffs of Brittany, cycling through the vineyards of Burgundy or titillating the Alpine peaks in the Pyrenees, they'll have no time to get bored. Shaped by centuries of history, France is a veritable open-air museum, delighting history and culture buffs as well as the simply curious.

Must-sees in France

There's so much to see in France, you'll be spoilt for choice. Paris, nicknamed the City of Light, is famous for its centuries-old monuments, which are unaffected by the passage of time. The emblematic Château de Versailles, a true architectural masterpiece, the Eiffel Tower, the symbol of the city, the Sacré-Coeur and its dome, not forgetting Notre-Dame, whose spires can be seen from afar, are just some of the must-see monuments. Between visits to the monuments, treat yourself to a romantic getaway on a bateau-mouche cruise along the Seine.

In northern Brittany, Saint-Malo, one of the country's most important ports, invites you to discover the remains of its tumultuous past. Take a stroll through the old town and you'll discover architectural gems such as Saint-Vincent Cathedral, with its stained glass windows dating back to the Middle Ages. Saint-Malo is also an interesting stop-off point before discovering the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. If you love fairy tales, treat yourself to a walk through the heart of the Loire Valley. The banks of the Loire are dotted with majestic châteaux, each as beautiful as the next, but the Château de Chambord is the finest of them all. This Italian Renaissance-inspired building bears the imprint of Leonardo da Vinci. Avignon, the former city of the Popes, is also well worth a visit, if only to stroll along its famous bridge. While you're in Avignon, take a trip to Orange to visit its ancient theater. Before leaving France, don't miss a visit to Marseille. The Phocaean city will amaze you. Take a stroll along the Vieux-Port, and you'll discover Notre-Dame de La Garde, the city's emblematic monument. Take advantage of the stroll to sample bouillabaisse and other Provencal specialties.

The best time to discover France

The ideal season to discover France varies according to the region you wish to visit. If you want to enjoy the seaside resorts, plan your trip for summer, between July and August. May is perfect if you want to enjoy the sea without the crowds. If you like to travel in the off-season, choose autumn too. The days are shorter, but the golden mantle that the landscape dons is of great beauty. If winter sports are your passion, plan your trip between December and April. The ski resorts of the Alps and Pyrenees open their doors to you for a stay punctuated by snow. December also sees Strasbourg's famous Christmas market.
