Indonesia is a transcontinental country in Southeast Asia. The world's largest archipelago comprises 17,508 islands with a total surface area of 1,904,569 km². A mosaic of different cultures, from Muslims to Hindus, Buddhists and Christians, live side by side and at their own pace. This multitude of islands in the heart of the ocean is an infinite canvas where nature has created masterpieces. In the impenetrable jungles of Sumatra, tigers, snakes and orangutans reign supreme. In Java, the volcanic mountains of Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi dominate the landscape. Bali, the main gateway to Indonesia, welcomes visitors to a succession of sandy beaches. In Kalimatam, ancient Borneo, the thick jungle is still home to the ancient tribes of head-choppers. If you like to be in communion with nature, you won't be disappointed by your stay in Indonesia, because here, nature sets the pace. As you stroll through Komodo National Park, one of the seven new natural wonders of the world, you'll be accompanied by the Komodo dragons, the large monitor lizards. And if you decide to go diving, you'll come face to face with kaleidoscopic fish and manta rays. On Gili Island, far from the crowds, you can revel in the pleasures of the water on a sandy beach. The coral reefs that adorn the island's seabed are home to stingrays and sea turtles, which you can get up close and personal with on a dive. If you're looking for the buzz of fashionable resorts, head for Seminyak or the Bukit peninsula.
Do you like hiking? Indonesia is home to a wide choice of trekking itineraries. In Toraja country, it's great to stroll along the rice terraces and admire the ballet of farmers on their way to the fields. While you're in this part of Indonesia, take advantage of the buffalo fights, dances and feasts that the region's deeply traditional people organize in honor of their dead. In Kalimantan's Tanjung Puting National Park, you'll meet the world's largest primates: the orang-utan. If you feel like it, you can cross the jungle on board a houseboat. In this fully equipped boat, you'll travel up the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey.
Some hikes in Indonesia are cultural strolls. Walks in the heart of the Baliem valley, for example, take you to the village of thatched huts belonging to the Danis, mountain people deeply attached to their destination. In the heart of Java, you'll discover the Borobudur temple, an architectural masterpiece of Indonesian art. The building's pyramidal shape, with open terraces one on top of the other, is a real eye-catcher, but the sculpted bas-reliefs are what really catch the eye. Central Java also boasts Candi Sukuk, dating from the 15th century. This temple overlooking the Solo plain is nicknamed "erotic time" because of the fertility sculptures that adorn it.
Indonesia enjoys a warm, humid equatorial climate. The ideal time to travel to this archipelago is from May to October, during the dry season. From July to August, Indonesians also play at being tourists, which increases the crowds at the most popular sites. For greater peace and quiet, it's best to plan your trip between May and June, or later, from September onwards.
