In the very north of the country, between the Altiplano and the Pacific coast, lie the regions of Arica and Putre. Nicknamed the city of "eternal spring", Arica boasts pleasant year-round temperatures and shady lanes criss-crossed by palm trees. From Arica, the colonial town of Putre is accessible by off-road vehicle. On roads that wind through the Andean highlands to reach an altitude of 3,561m, the journey is exceptional. At the summit, the panorama of volcanoes such as Taapaca and Ancoma is remarkable, before descending to the town of Colchane, a journey punctuated by a succession of landscapes and colors. The little-frequented Salar de Surire, on the border with Bolivia, stands out for its surreal color and the many pink flamingos that populate it.
A high-altitude village perched at 2400m, San Pedro de Atacama has retained its colonial atmosphere, with cobbled streets and period buildings. The church of San Pedro still stands with its immaculate white walls. A starting point for excursions to the Atacama and other impressive sites, the village welcomes visitors with its typically Andean craft market. In the south of the country, the town of Copiapo, capital of the Atacama, boasts the highest active volcanoes in the Andes, with altitudes easily exceeding 6,000m. The road then skirts the Pan de Azucar park and the beaches of Caldera and Bahia Inglesia, with their white sands on the Pacific coast and ideal for scuba diving, a popular activity in the area, before arriving in the real Atacama region. Turquoise-green, dominating the mountains, this landscape is one of nature's greatest spectacles. A land of legends, Chile is also distinguished by its ageless vestiges. In a totally different setting, the regions of Santiago and Valparaiso await visitors in the very center of Chile. Bars, restaurants and museums are all part of Santiago's décor, set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, including the elusive Andes range. A seaside resort and fishing center, Valparaiso guarantees a complete change of scenery, with its multicolored houses dotting the hills, sailboats moored in the harbor and cobblestone streets criss-crossing the neighborhoods.
As part of the Wine Route and the Andes Crossing, Chile plays a major role in international wine production. Varieties of vineyards stretch across the northern Riconada Valley. Next to the Bellas Artes museum in Mendoza, the Opera Cathédral restaurant offers the finest dishes prepared by a French chef, accompanied by local wine.
The temperature in Chile varies according to the region. In the north, the weather is dry and relatively temperate. In central Chile, on the other hand, the climate is more Mediterranean, with temperatures around 28°C in January. To visit the center of the country, February to April are the best months. If you choose Chile for its national park or lake region, December to March is the ideal period. And from June to August, ski resorts await enthusiasts of all levels, especially in snow-capped Mendoza.
